Besides teenage sulkiness, it’s not often that something grows by 2000% in just two years. So consider this – the number of mobile-friendly sites in 2008 was 150,000. In 2010? That number’s now over 3 million (dotMobi). I wish my bank account grew so fast.

In fact, the rate of growth of mobile web content has outpaced the growth of the desktop web. According to dotMobi CEO Trey Harvin, “Businesses of all sizes need to prepare for the change in how people will access content by embracing the mobile Web.” Makes sense to me – think of how many people you know who have smart phones or iPads. Then think about how that number is only going to grow over the next few years, including those sulking teenagers who’ve grown up expecting (demanding) mobile-friendly sites.

Of course, you’ll want to make sure your mobile Web presence is in line with your other branding and communication efforts. Mobile is good, cohesive is better. Want more reasons to funnel resources into mobile-friendly content for your brand? According to Trey Harvin, “Companies that have focused on good mobile user experiences and mobile-friendly websites now have strong advantages in competing for visitors, sales, and customer loyalty…And these advantages are already positively impacting sales at their desktop websites.” What’s not to like?
